Privacy policy

Last updated: 8 October 2026

TerraRiot operates this shop and website, including all related information, content, features, tools, products and services, to provide you, as a customer, with a personalised shopping experience (the “Services”). TerraRiot is powered by Shopify, which enables us to provide the Services to you. This Privacy Policy describes how we collect, use or disclose personal data when you visit or use the website, make a purchase or another transaction using the Services, or otherwise communicate with us. If there is a conflict between our General Terms and Conditions and this Privacy Policy, this Privacy Policy takes precedence in relation to the collection, processing and disclosure of your personal data.

Please read this Privacy Policy carefully. It explains how your personal data is processed. Where consent is required, we obtain it separately.

What personal data do we collect or process?

When we use the term “personal data”, we mean information that identifies you or another person or can be directly associated with you. Personal data does not include information collected anonymously or anonymised so that it cannot identify you or be associated with you. Depending on how you interact with the Services, where you live and what applicable law permits or requires, we may collect or process the following categories of personal data, including inferences drawn from that data:

  • Contact details, including your name, postal address, billing address, delivery address, telephone number and email address.
  • Financial information, including credit card, debit card and financial account numbers, payment card information, financial account information, transaction details, payment method, payment confirmation and other payment details.
  • Account information, including your email address, sign-in confirmations, account settings and information you provide in your customer account. Our Shopify customer accounts use passwordless sign-in with a one-time code sent by email.
  • Transaction information, including items you view, add to your cart, purchase, return, exchange or cancel, and your past transactions.
  • Communications with us, including information you provide when communicating with us, for example when you send a customer support enquiry.
  • Device information, including information about your device, browser or network connection, IP address and other unique identifiers.
  • Usage information, including information about your interaction with the Services, including how and when you interact with or browse them.

Sources of personal data

We may collect personal data from the following sources:

  • Directly from you: for example, when you create an account, access or use the Services, communicate with us or otherwise provide us with your personal data.
  • Automatically through the Services: for example, from your device, when you use our products or Services or visit our website, and through cookies and similar technologies.
  • From our service providers: for example, when we engage them to enable certain technologies and when they collect or process your personal data on our behalf.
  • From our partners and other third parties.

How do we use your personal data?

Depending on how you interact with us or which Services you use, we may use personal data for the following purposes:

  • Providing, personalising and improving the Services. We use your personal data to provide the Services to you. This includes fulfilling our contract with you, processing your payments, fulfilling your orders, storing your preferences and the items you are interested in, sending account-related notifications, creating, maintaining and otherwise managing your account, arranging shipping, facilitating returns and exchanges, enabling you to leave reviews, and providing a personalised shopping experience, for example by recommending products based on your purchases. This may also include using your personal data to better personalise and improve the Services.
  • Newsletters and advertising. We use your email address for the TerraRiot newsletter after you have consented and confirmed your subscription; details are provided in the section “Newsletter with email confirmation”. We do not currently send advertising messages by text message or post. Our own shop remarketing is currently disabled. Processing in connection with the Shopify features we use is described in “Relationship with Shopify”. Advertising that requires consent is subject to the consent rules described in “Legal bases”.
  • Security and fraud prevention. We use your personal data to authenticate your account, provide a secure payment and shopping experience, detect, investigate or take action against possible fraudulent, illegal, unsafe or malicious activities, protect public safety and ensure the security of our Services. If you decide to use the Services and register an account, you are responsible for protecting your account credentials. Please do not share your one-time sign-in codes or other access credentials with anyone else.
  • Communicating with you. We use your personal data to provide customer support and effective Services, respond promptly to your enquiries and maintain our business relationship with you.
  • Legal reasons. We use your personal data to comply with applicable law or respond to lawful legal processes, including requests from law enforcement or regulatory authorities, investigate or participate in civil investigations, potential or actual litigation or other adversarial proceedings, and investigate potential breaches of our terms or policies or enforce those terms and policies.

How do we disclose personal data?

In certain circumstances, we may disclose your personal data to third parties for legitimate purposes in accordance with this Privacy Policy. These circumstances may include:

  • With Shopify, vendors and other third parties providing services on our behalf, for example IT management, payment processing, data analysis, customer support, cloud storage, fulfilment and shipping.
  • Our shop uses Shopify Network Intelligence. Shopify may process data from interactions with our shop, other merchants and Shopify for enhanced services, for example to improve features, personalise services and target advertising. Shopify describes this processing and the recipients involved in its privacy policy linked in the following section. Uses requiring consent are subject to your cookie choices; you can change these using “Cookie preferences” in the footer. You can also exercise your rights in relation to Shopify through the Shopify privacy portal linked below. Information about the integrated Google and Meta channels is provided in “Product listings on Google, Facebook and Instagram”.
  • When you ask us, or otherwise consent, to disclose certain information to third parties, for example to deliver products to you, or when you use social media widgets or sign-in integrations.
  • In connection with a business transaction such as a merger or insolvency, to comply with applicable legal obligations (including responding to subpoenas, search warrants and similar requests), enforce applicable terms of service or policies, and protect or defend the Services, our rights and the rights of our users or others.

Relationship with Shopify

The Services are hosted by Shopify, which collects and processes personal data about your access to and use of the Services to provide and improve them. Data you submit to the Services is disclosed to Shopify and to third parties that may be located in countries other than your country of residence, to provide and improve the Services for you. To protect, grow and improve our business, we also use certain enhanced Shopify features that incorporate data and information from your interactions with our shop, other merchants and Shopify. To provide these enhanced features, Shopify may use personal data collected through your interactions with our shop, other merchants and Shopify. In these circumstances, Shopify is responsible for processing your personal data, including responding to requests to exercise your rights concerning the use of your personal data for these purposes. For more information about how Shopify uses your personal data and your rights, see the Shopify Consumer Privacy Policy. Depending on where you live, you can exercise certain rights concerning your personal data listed here through the Shopify privacy portal.

Third-party websites and links

The Services may provide links to websites or other online platforms operated by third parties. If you follow links to websites that are not affiliated with us or are not controlled by us, you should review their privacy and security policies and other terms and conditions. We do not guarantee, and are not responsible for, the privacy or security of those websites, including the accuracy, completeness or reliability of the information on them. Information you provide in public or semi-public places, including information you share on third-party social networking platforms, may also be visible to other users of the Services and/or users of those third-party platforms, without restrictions on its use by us or a third party. Our inclusion of such links does not imply endorsement of the content of those platforms or their owners or operators, unless expressly stated in the Services.

Children’s data

The Services are not intended for children, and we do not knowingly collect personal data from children who have not reached the age of majority in your country. If you are the parent or guardian of a child who has provided us with personal data, you can contact us using the details below to request its deletion. As of the effective date of this Privacy Policy, we are not aware that we “share” or “sell” (as those terms are defined by applicable law) personal data about individuals under 16.

Security and retention of your data

Please note that no security measures are perfect or impenetrable, so we cannot guarantee “perfect security”. Information you send us may also be exposed to risks during transmission. We recommend that you do not use insecure channels to send sensitive or confidential information to us.

How long we retain your personal data depends on various factors, including whether we need the data to manage your account, provide Services, comply with legal obligations, resolve disputes, or enforce other applicable agreements and policies.

Your rights and choices

Depending on where you live, you may have some or all of the rights listed below in relation to your personal data. These rights are not absolute, may apply only in certain circumstances, and in some cases we may decline your request to the extent permitted by law.

  • Right of access. You may have the right to request access to the personal data we hold about you.
  • Right to erasure. You may have the right to request that we delete personal data we hold about you.
  • Right to rectification. You may have the right to request that we correct inaccurate personal data we hold about you.
  • Right to data portability. You may have the right to receive a copy of the personal data we hold about you and to request that we transfer it to a third party in certain circumstances and subject to certain exceptions.
  • Managing communication preferences. We may send you promotional emails. You can opt out at any time using the unsubscribe option included in our emails. If you opt out, we may still send you non-promotional emails, for example about your account or orders you have placed.

If you live in the United Kingdom or the European Economic Area, you can also exercise the following rights, subject to exceptions and restrictions under local law:

  • Right to object and right to restrict processing. You may have the right to request that we stop or restrict the processing of personal data for certain purposes.
  • Withdrawal of consent. Where we rely on consent to process your personal data, you have the right to withdraw it. Withdrawing consent does not affect the lawfulness of processing based on your consent before its withdrawal.

You can exercise these rights where indicated in the Services or by contacting us using the details below. For more information about how Shopify uses your personal data and your rights, including rights relating to data processed by Shopify, visit https://privacy.shopify.com/en.

You will not be disadvantaged for exercising these rights. Where applicable law permits or requires it, we may need to verify your identity before processing your requests. In accordance with applicable law, you may appoint an authorised agent to make requests on your behalf to exercise your rights. Before accepting a request from an agent, we require evidence that you have authorised the agent to act on your behalf. You may need to verify your identity directly with us. We will respond promptly to your request in accordance with applicable law.

Complaints

If you have complaints about how we process your personal data, please contact us using the details below. Depending on where you live, you have the right to appeal our decision by contacting us using the details below or to lodge a complaint with the relevant data protection authority. A list of the competent data protection supervisory authorities in the European Economic Area is available here.

International transfers

Please note that we may transfer, store and process your personal data outside your country of residence.

When we transfer your personal data outside the European Economic Area or the United Kingdom, we rely on recognised transfer mechanisms such as the European Commission’s Standard Contractual Clauses or equivalent contracts issued by the relevant UK authority, unless the transfer is to a country recognised as providing an adequate level of protection.

Changes to this Privacy Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time, for example to reflect changes in our practices or for other operational, legal or regulatory reasons. We will publish the revised Privacy Policy on this website, update the “Last updated” date accordingly and provide any notice required by applicable law.

The controller is Olaf Oberbremer, trading as TerraRiot, Mindener Straße 172, 32049 Herford, Germany. Contact: info@terra-riot.com, telephone +49 171 9518512. Visiting our shop does not, by itself, constitute consent to processing that requires consent.

Legal bases

We process orders, payments, deliveries and contract-related communications under Article 6(1)(b) GDPR. Statutory retention obligations and the electronic cancellation function are based on Article 6(1)(c) GDPR. For secure technical operation and protection against misuse, where necessary and following a balancing of interests, we rely on Article 6(1)(f) GDPR. Analytics, advertising and non-essential access to your device that require consent take place only with your consent under Article 6(1)(a) GDPR and section 25(1) TDDDG; technically necessary access is governed by section 25(2) TDDDG. You can change your cookie choices using “Cookie preferences” in the footer.

Payment processing with PayPal

If you choose PayPal, payment is processed by PayPal (Europe) S.à r.l. et Cie, S.C.A., 22–24 Boulevard Royal, L-2449 Luxembourg. The contact, billing, delivery, order and transaction data required for processing are transmitted to PayPal. PayPal also processes payment data and technical information, such as device and connection data, arising when its service is used. Our necessary disclosure of data serves to perform the purchase contract under Article 6(1)(b) GDPR.

PayPal processes data on its own responsibility for purposes including payment processing, fraud prevention and compliance with legal obligations. Depending on the PayPal service selected, identity or credit checks may also take place. Details of the legal bases, recipients, transfers outside the EEA, safeguards, retention periods and your rights are provided in the PayPal Privacy Statement.

Payment processing with Klarna

If you select a Klarna payment method offered at checkout, it is processed by Klarna Bank AB (publ), Sveavägen 46, 111 34 Stockholm, Sweden. Klarna receives the contact, billing, delivery, order and transaction data required for processing. Additional information Klarna needs for the selected payment method, such as date of birth or payment information, is collected during the respective payment process. Our necessary disclosure of data serves to perform the purchase contract under Article 6(1)(b) GDPR.

Klarna processes data on its own responsibility for payment processing, identity and fraud checks, and compliance with legal obligations. Payment methods involving the granting of credit may entail credit checks, transfers to credit reference agencies and automated decisions. The data and legal bases involved depend on the Klarna service selected. Details of recipients, possible transfers outside the EEA and associated safeguards, retention periods, your data protection rights and your rights concerning automated decisions are provided in the Klarna Privacy Notice.

Production and shipping by Printegy

To produce and deliver our print-on-demand products, Printegy GmbH receives the order and delivery data required for these purposes, particularly your name, delivery address and ordered items, and any contact details needed for delivery. Disclosure serves to perform the contract under Article 6(1)(b) GDPR. Provider information: Printegy Privacy Policy.

Electronic cancellation with Revoq

Our cancellation function is provided by Revoq, operated by Jonas Busch (sole trader, BuschBytes), as a processor under Article 28 GDPR. The names, email addresses and information about the contract or items concerned that you enter in the form are processed, together with the time of receipt and processing status. The purpose is to receive and document your cancellation and send an electronic acknowledgement of receipt. The legal basis is Article 6(1)(c) GDPR in conjunction with section 356a BGB; subsequent contract processing takes place under Article 6(1)(b) GDPR.

Technical storage takes place in EU data centres; Revoq uses an email service provider to send the acknowledgement of receipt. Under the Free plan we use, cancellation records in Revoq are automatically deleted after 90 days. Our own documentation, including confirmation emails, is retained only for as long as necessary to process the cancellation, comply with statutory retention obligations and establish or defend claims. Information about service providers and safeguards: Revoq privacy and data processing information.

Your data protection rights

Subject to the statutory requirements, you have rights of access, rectification, erasure, restriction of processing and data portability under Articles 15–20 GDPR. Under Article 21 GDPR, you can object to processing based on legitimate interests on grounds relating to your particular situation; you have the right to object to direct marketing at any time. You can withdraw any consent you have given at any time with effect for the future. Send requests to info@terra-riot.com. You can also lodge a complaint with a data protection supervisory authority, particularly the State Commissioner for Data Protection and Freedom of Information of North Rhine-Westphalia.

Contact form and email enquiries

When you contact us, we process your email address, the content of your message and any contact details you provide voluntarily, such as your name, telephone number or order number, to answer your enquiry. For questions concerning a contract or steps before entering into a contract, the legal basis is Article 6(1)(b) GDPR; for other enquiries, it is Article 6(1)(f) GDPR, our legitimate interest in handling your message. The contact form is provided through Shopify. Please do not send copies of identity documents, full payment details or other sensitive information that is unnecessary for your enquiry.

Newsletter with email confirmation

We use your email address for our TerraRiot newsletter with your consent under Article 6(1)(a) GDPR. You first receive an email containing a confirmation link (double opt-in). Only after confirmation will you receive newsletters about new designs and drops. Your subscription and its confirmation status are documented in Shopify so that we can demonstrate your consent. You can withdraw your consent at any time with effect for the future using the unsubscribe link in each newsletter or by emailing info@terra-riot.com. Messages about orders or existing contracts are sent independently of this. After unsubscribing, your address is no longer used for sending newsletters; necessary evidence of consent and withdrawal may be retained to defend claims on the basis of Article 6(1)(f) GDPR.

Protecting forms with hCaptcha

Shopify uses hCaptcha in our forms to protect against automated spam and abusive enquiries. The provider is Intuition Machines, Inc., 1065 SW 8th St #704, Miami, FL 33130, USA. Technical connection and usage data, particularly IP address, time and interaction data, may be processed for verification. For the necessary protection of our forms, we rely on Article 6(1)(f) GDPR; our legitimate interest is secure operation free from misuse. Where access to your device requires consent, the consent rules described in “Legal bases” apply. Processing in the USA is possible. The provider describes its safeguards, including Standard Contractual Clauses and the Data Privacy Framework, in its Privacy Policy. If you have questions or difficulties with the form, you can also contact us directly by email.

Privacy on our Facebook and Instagram profiles

We operate the TerraRiot Facebook page and the Instagram profile @terra_riot to present our brand and answer questions. Olaf Oberbremer, TerraRiot, Mindener Straße 172, 32049 Herford, Germany, is responsible for our own processing. You can contact us at info@terra-riot.com.

Contact and public posts

When you write to us or comment on our profiles, we process the content you provide, your profile name and the contact and interaction data visible to us. We use this information to respond, manage our profiles and, where applicable, process an order. Other people can see public comments. Please do not send sensitive information or payment data in public comments; you can use our email address for order-related questions.

We handle contract-related enquiries on the basis of Article 6(1)(b) GDPR. Other communication and moderation are based on Article 6(1)(f) GDPR: our legitimate interest is accessible, factual communication about TerraRiot and protecting our profiles against misuse. We fulfil statutory documentation obligations on the basis of Article 6(1)(c) GDPR.

Platforms and usage statistics

Facebook and Instagram are provided in the European Region by Meta Platforms Ireland Limited, Merrion Road, Dublin 4, D04 X2K5, Ireland. Meta processes data when its services are visited and used. For details, including the platforms’ legal bases, retention periods, possible processing outside the European Economic Area and the safeguards provided for this, see the Meta Privacy Policy for Facebook and the Instagram Privacy Policy.

The platforms provide us with aggregated usage statistics. These enable us to assess the reach of our content and improve our presentation. Our own analysis serves this legitimate interest (Article 6(1)(f) GDPR). We are joint controllers with Meta for processing in connection with Facebook Page Insights; this does not mean joint responsibility for all other processing by Meta. Meta explains the allocation of responsibilities in the Page Insights Controller Addendum and the Information about Page Insights Data. You can exercise your rights concerning joint processing against either us or Meta.

Retention periods and your rights

We delete our own copies of enquiries when processing is complete and there is no further objectively necessary processing, need to defend legal claims or statutory retention obligation. Business and supporting records subject to retention requirements are stored separately and deleted after the applicable retention period. Public comments may remain on a profile for as long as they belong to the relevant post; you can remove your own comment or ask us to review its deletion. Our removal does not replace the deletion of data stored independently by Meta. The Meta policies referred to above apply to that data.

Subject to the statutory requirements, you have rights of access, rectification, erasure, restriction and data portability. You can object to processing based on legitimate interests on grounds relating to your particular situation. You can also lodge a complaint with a data protection supervisory authority. For questions about our processing, email info@terra-riot.com. Contact and settings options for platform data can be found in the linked Meta policies.

Product listings on Google, Facebook and Instagram

We have integrated Google’s official Shopify “Google & YouTube” channel and Meta’s “Facebook & Instagram” channel to display our TerraRiot products on these platforms. Public product data such as titles, descriptions, images, prices, availability and shipping information may be synchronised for this purpose. The providers in the European Region are Google Ireland Limited, Gordon House, Barrow Street, Dublin 4, Ireland, and Meta Platforms Ireland Limited, Merrion Road, Dublin 4, D04 X2K5, Ireland. Our integration serves to present our products; where personal data is processed in this connection, the legal basis is our legitimate interest under Article 6(1)(f) GDPR. Orders placed through TerraRiot are processed in accordance with the rules described above.

We use Google Analytics 4 through the official Shopify channel to analyse the use of our shop and improve our offering. Data collected may include page and product views, interactions, cart and checkout events, and purchases with product, value and currency information, as well as pseudonymous device and session identifiers, browser and device information, approximate region and traffic source. Google processes IP addresses for technical communication and deriving location; Google Analytics 4 does not store individual IP addresses. Analysis is assigned to TerraRiot’s own property.

The legal bases for analytics requiring consent and access to your device are Article 6(1)(a) GDPR and section 25(1) TDDDG. Your analytics and marketing choices are transmitted to Google through Shopify’s consent management. You can choose analytics and marketing separately. You can reject them and withdraw consent at any time with effect for the future using “Cookie preferences” in the footer. Personal event and user data in Analytics are deleted after two months; new activity does not extend this period. Aggregated standard reports may remain available for longer. Google Signals, the collection of user-provided data and personalised advertising are disabled in our TerraRiot Analytics property. Form and search events are not collected through enhanced measurement; email addresses and defined sensitive URL parameters are redacted.

Customer activity sharing in the Facebook & Instagram channel is configured to ‘Enhanced’, with the Meta pixel, advanced matching and Conversions API. We do not run our own paid Google or Meta advertising campaigns. Additional information and opt-out options are provided by Google in Privacy in Google Analytics and through the Google Analytics Opt-out Browser Add-on.

When using Google or Meta platforms, their own privacy information also applies: the Google Privacy Policy, Meta Privacy Policy and Instagram Privacy Policy. Processing outside the European Economic Area, particularly in the USA, is possible. Information about recipients, retention periods, rights and safeguards is provided in the linked policies.

Photos and information for personalised shirts

When you order an individually personalised TerraRiot shirt, we process the animal photos you upload, the animal’s species, your requested name or slogan, and any design details you provide voluntarily. The files and information are associated with your order through Shopify. Processing serves to assess the images, create the design, agree the draft and produce your shirt; the legal basis is Article 6(1)(b) GDPR. Please upload only suitable animal photos, and no images containing identifiable people, private documents, location details or other sensitive content.

Uploaded files can be accessed through their associated file links. Please do not share these links. We do not use your photos for advertising or public posts without separate consent. For printing, the design you have approved is transmitted to the production partner named in the order processing section. Uploading a photo alone does not trigger automatic production.

Retention depends on what is necessary to process your order, any warranty or defence of legal claims, and the statutory retention obligations described above. For questions about the use or deletion of your images, contact info@terra-riot.com. The rights and information about Shopify explained in this Privacy Policy also apply to this processing.
